A 2013 new model, the Richard Mille RM 58-01 World Timer Jean Todt is produced as a limited edition of 35 timepieces and features a hand-wound tourbillon movement with hours and minutes, a power reserve indicator, and a universal 24-hour time display. The case is composed of four parts the fixed bezel and the case back are made polished and satin-brushed red gold, the middle case is made of satin-brushed titanium, while the rotating bezel is in shot-blasted and polished titanium. The case offers water-resistance to 50 metres. The 10-day power reserve is provided by two barrels fitted consecutively and is indicated on a numerical scale at 2 o'clock. The RM 58-01 makes extremely easy to adjust the time zone. The time is set by simply rotating the bezel anticlockwise. It is sufficient to place the name of the desired city at 12 o’clock to automatically set the local time and read the time in each of the 23 other international cities marked on the 24-hour bezel. The lower disc, divided into 24 hours, shows the time in other cities and indicates whether it is day white part or night black part. The easy setting is possible thanks to the fact that the rotating bezel includes a specific wheel connected to the movement that acts directly on the hours wheel. The Richard Mille RM 58-01 is not a watch for small wrists with a diameter of 50 mm and a thickness of 15,35 mm.

Indicative prices Swiss Francs 150,000 for the RM 11-03, Swiss Francs 900,000 for the RM 050 and Swiss Francs 1,700,000 for the RM 056. In honour of Jean Todt, which this year celebrates 50 years of career in the automotive world, Richard Mille is introducing three new models dedicated to his close friend, a man who wrote exceptional pages of motorsport history. The first timepiece is the RM 11-03 Jean Todt 50th Anniversary which maintains the new design codes introduced last September with the RM 11-03 Flyback Chronograph. Powered by an architectural automatic calibre in grade 5 titanium, the RM 11-03 Jean Todt 50th Anniversary is protected by a new blue and white Quartz TPT case. Extremely resistant and light, this composite is obtained by stacking 600 layers of silica only 45 microns thick, which are then impregnated with an exclusive Richard Mille blue resin. The assembly is then heated to 120 °C before being machined. Blue Quartz TPT is also used for the case of the RM 050 Jean Todt 50th Anniversary. This calibre houses a split-seconds chronograph regulated by a tourbillon. The extreme skeletonisation of the bridges and baseplate, combined with the use of titanium and carbon nanofibre made it possible to obtain a particularly light movement, weighing only grams while offering exceptional performance. The same mechanism of the RM 050 also animates the final piece of the Jean Todt collection the RM 056, which is housed in a sapphire case. Its construction and curvature require very long machining times. To achieve this level of finish, each case required no less than 1,000 hours of machining, including 430 hours devoted to grinding and 350 hours of polishing. The RM 11-03, RM 050 and RM 056 Jean Todt 50th Anniversary will be produced in limited editions of 150, 5 and 3 pieces, respectively. Indicative prices Swiss Francs 150,000 for the RM 11-03, Swiss Francs 900,000 for the RM 050 and Swiss Francs 1,700,000 for the RM 056.
When two personalities like that of Richard Mille and that of Jean Todt meet, the result can only be something exceptional and highly exclusive. The Genevan maison released 3 different models to celebrate Jean Todt’s 50 years of career as a Formula 1 manager, his current role as the FIA Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile president and his position as the former head of the Ferrari Formula 1. Since its foundation in 1999, this Swiss haute-horlogerie manufacturer has distinguished itself for its extreme technological spirit that has always characterized its creations, its design and, consequently, its engineering skills applied to watch-making not the opposite – as it usually happens with the majority of the maisons -. This is one of the reasons why Richard Mille can be considered as a world’s unique brand. The Richard Mille RM 11-03 Jean Todt 50th anniversary focuses on lightness and performance, the same as if this timepiece were a Formula 1 racing car. The design and the shape of this Flyback chrono follow the strict rules of engineering with the case being crafted in electric blue and white TPT Quartz by using 600 layers of silica each layer is 45 micrometre thick. The manufacturing process of TPT Quartz resembles that of the kings of composites, made of carbon fibre. Quartz crystals are melted through the combined action of pressure and temperature, thin fibre particles are then extracted from the melted crystals and these are dipped into a resin solution that transforms them into a thin material layer with fibres pointing towards a single direction. The automatic and skeletonized calibre in-house built by Richard Mille is almost entirely made of grade 5 titanium alloy it includes a 6% Aluminum and a 4% Vanadium and it features an 18K white–gold winding rotor. The calibre sports the typical complications of a Flyback chrono it allows the seconds hand to immediately re-start from the zero position without having to stop the chrono first, an annual calendar with automatic months adjustment, a double winding barrel wheel that guarantees up to 55 hours of power reserve, a spring that oscillates at 4Hz and 68 rubies too. The total mass of the calibre as weight isn’t the exact word that an engineer would use totals 9,5 grams. Both the dial and the upper and lower crystals are made of anti-glare sapphire glass, the upper crystal is 1,5mm thick and sports a hardness of up to 1,800 Vickers to give you an idea of the high performance level that this type of crystal can offer, please keep in mind that nitride steel can reach a hardness of up to about 1,000 Vickers. The design of this timepiece is in the typical Richard Mille shape and it is enriched by some features reminding us of the car world, in particular that of Formula 1. The winding crown looks a lot like the wheel hub of single-seater cars, while, in my opinion, the writings on the chrono buttons, remind me of the writings that you can find on the steering wheel of single-seater cars. The ample date section is located at 12 o’clock, while the month indicator is located between 4 o’clock and 5 o’clock; the date change happens semi-instantly as soon as midnight strikes. As a Ducati engineer, I cannot avoid a comparison between the Richard Mille RM 11-03 Jean Todt 50th anniversary and our most prestigious creation; the 1299 Panigale Superleggera. Exclusivity deeply roots in top-notch technical features, the extreme research of materials and very limited manufacturing numbers 150 samples in total. It is not the retail price that makes this timepiece unique, but rather its uniqueness that determines the CHF 150,000 retail price at today’s rate exchange, that translates into about 130,000 euro. To call Richard Mille a “luxury sensation” would probably be accurate. The super high-end Swiss watch brand likely considers this almost $150,000 timepiece practically entry-level given its many million-dollar-plus creations – and yet, so much of why Richard Mille as a watchmaker is popular is in this particular limited edition watch. In a captivating marbled blue and white case produced from Quartz TPT material – the Richard Mille RM 11-03 Jean Todt 50th Anniversary timepiece is a salute to a friend of the brand as well as proof that even high-luxury can be trendy. “Timeless and classic” are not terms you’d generally hear from anyone speaking about Richard Mille products – especially people at the company itself. Inspired by the philosophy of a total focus on the performance-over-cost mentality borrowed from other industries such as the world of Formula 1 racing, Richard Mille products are all about pushing the envelope of possibility. All images by David Bredan Depending on who you ask, that push by Richard Mille seems to be equally in areas of technical mechanics, design, marketing strategy, and of course, pricing. Let’s return to this particular limited edition of 150 pieces RM 11-03, which again sees Richard Mille paying homage to Mr. Jean Todt of racing, Ferrari, and Formula 1 fame. The particular purpose of the watch is on the thinner side, being directly attributed to celebrating the 50th anniversary of Jean Todt’s “career.” More specifically, like many other luxury watches, this product is, in fact, an authentic celebration trophy for Mr. Todt, his buddies, and fans I wrote here why watches make the best trophies. The celebration is indeed for Mr. Todt and Richard Mille as opposed to the buyers themselves, but it is a tacit reminder by Richard Mille to its consumers that “you should make or buy a watch when you too have such a celebration to recognize.” It is well established in the luxury world that consumers no matter their budget level are the most inspired to purchase something such as watch when they are seeking to commemorate something. It’s a great opportunity for Richard Mille to experiment with colors and further develop the legendary RM 11 watch collection which helped put the brand on the map. In its advanced form, the RM 11 has the same useful movements, but an exotic case produced from Quartz TPT, a material produced in Switzerland and borrowed from performance vehicles. The material is a dense layering of hundreds of sheets of silica which are mere microns thick for each layer. The blue is merely cosmetic, but it wouldn’t be a Richard Mille without an invigorated splash of color. Richard Mille first released a Quartz TPT-cased watch back in 2015 with the RM 27-02 Rafael Nadal. In that previous article you can learn more about the lightweight, yet very strong and visually interesting material. No, it isn’t as iconic as gold or platinum but you can’t “impregnate” – which is the actual term Richard Mille uses – those traditional luxury materials with colors such as blue, red, green, yellow, and white as has been done to a range of high-end limited watches by the brand. A brief look at Richard Mille watches produced from Quartz TPT covered on aBlogtoWatch demonstrates the visual variety available – more so, how successful use of exotic and modern materials such as this have been for a brand like Richard Mille. Richard Mille himself, and the brand do indeed hang closely with people like Mr. Todt. Part of the honesty in their relationship is what makes limited editions such as this perhaps more interesting to watch lovers than those we see from many other watch brands where the relationship feels a lot more like simple marketing. That Jean Todt and Richard Mille would continue to celebrate Todt’s life and achievements together makes sense – partially because Mr. Todt himself is the archetype of someone who should be a Richard Mille customer. More so, this RM 11-03 is far from the most expensive timepiece Richard Mille has made in honor of the man. With that said, it happens to be particularly nice. Perhaps it is because blue as color is particularly en vogue right now, or because of how nicely the RM 11 collection has aged. What makes this watch special from a watch collector’s perspective is that the caliber RM11 movement continues to stand out. The 4Hz, 55 hour power reserve automatic combined both a chronograph as well as an annual calendar month as well as a big date indicator together. As practical as this combination seems to be, few if any other watch brands have attempted to offer a competing product. The RM11 movement also looks fantastic. Entirely skeletonized, being produced using finely finished titanium bridges, the movement view is a less than subtle reminder to the owner of why an item such as this might cost so much. Few brands are as skilled as Richard Mille when it comes to displaying modern microcosms in their full mechanical glory. In an age when mechanical watches are increasingly distinct from their smartwatch siblings, showing off the guts of your watch has never been more popular. The RM 11-03 in the Quartz TPT case follows the classic Richard Mille tonneau-shape but with some crenelation for the case screws. It is wide, tall, and thick. The watch comes on a “vented” custom black rubber strap and looks about as much like a contemporary super-machine on the wrist as you could hope for. If you need to explain why Richard Mille does as well as it does, it is because it respects the rules of traditional watchmaking while incorporating almost entirely modern design elements and themes. Richard Mille watches are also not at all shy about being noticed – and what I think is common across all Richard Mille owners is that they are happy about the perceived attention. As a limited edition of 150 pieces, the Richard Mille RM 11-03 Jean Todt 50th Anniversary watch has a retail price of $140,000 USD.
Jean Todt, President of the FIA, is a man in great demand, traveling thousands of kilometers around the globe every year for official events and conferences. Richard Mille conceived a timepiece offering extreme travellers like Jean Todt an easy and useful method for keeping track of travel through time zones . This manually winding movement has hours, minutes and a 10-day power reserve shown on an indicator at 2 o’clock. The caliber RM58-01, 34mm in diameter, is supported on a baseplate of grade 5 titanium, a material also utilized for the bridges. The tourbillon, positioned at 9 o’clock and oscillating at a frequency of 3Hz, is accommodated in a four-part case made from titanium and red gold. The shot-blasted, satin-brushed and polished rotating bezel bears the names of 24 world cities, symbols of the international 24 time zones on its brown upper flange. Behind this apparent simplicity hides a technical mechanism of great complexity. The RM 58-01 does not need any adjusting push-piece to change from one time zone to another. The time is set by simply rotating the bezel anticlockwise, making adjustment a quicker operation. All the traveller needs to do is position the name of the city where he or she has just landed at 12 o’clock, which automatically sets local time and the time in the other 23 world cities thanks to the 24-hour scale engraved on the flange. The black and white disc distinguishes day from night for the user automatically, so there is no possibility of confusion. This innovation is the outcome of many hours of work by Richard Mille’s movement and case engineers, who managed the feat of linking the bezel and movement with a special gear train for perfect interaction, while ensuring that the whole timepiece remains perfectly water-resistant. The RM 58-01 World Timer is produced as a limited edition of 35 timepieces. Profits from the sale of this exceptional watch will be transferred to two key initiatives close to Jean Todt’s heart the Global Campaign for Road Safety as well as the ICM Brain and Spine Institute, which he co-founded.
